If you want to keep something more exotic than a fat goldfish or a school of generic neon tetra in your aquarium, you should definitely take a look at the family Cichlidae. Within this family you will find a lot of exotic tropical fish that is not very hard to care for. Some of the species are really tricky to keep and should only be purchased by experienced aquarists, but there are also quite a few cichlids that are very sturdy and adaptable and can be recommended even for beginners. You can for instance get a pair of Kribensis cichlids. These cichlids come from tropical West Africa and will develop really beautiful pastel colours as they mature. Just make sure that the water temperature is kept in the 25-28° C (77-82° F) range. Kribensis cichlids are known to adapt to both soft and hard water, and they can tolerate a pH-value from 5.0 to 7.5. It is however always important to avoid rapid changes in temperature, hardness or acidic, since rapid changes is very stressful for the fish. They might very well survive, but it is not a pleasant experience for them and they will suffer. Strive to make all changes in the aquarium slow and gradual. Your Kribensis cichlids will appreciate an aquarium with plenty of hiding spots since this is what they are used to from the wild.
